For years, iPhone users have wished for a USB-C port to replace Apple’s exclusive Lightning port on the bottom of their devices. Furthermore, after bidding for the world’s first USB-C iPhone finished with a winning offer of USD 86,001 (about PHP 4.3M), what began as a basic technical endeavor has now resulted in a huge profit for the device’s designer.

The phone, which was made possible by robotics engineering major Kenn Pillonel, uses a physical port to charge and transfer data. Pillonel cautions, however, that the buyer should not use the phone on a regular basis, disassemble it, or update the operating system, as doing so may cause it to break.

The fact that the mod has sold for more than eighty times its original price should come as no surprise. It was unknown where the original price would fall because, after starting at USD 1, bids quickly soared up to USD 30,000 before eventually reaching USD 80,001.

Moreover, despite the project’s use of an older iPhone model, the project’s high winning bid and broad attention show that consumers really want a USB-C for their iPhones.
