New health facilities, commercial hubs and a sports stadium are expected to rise in six localities in Cebu province amid massive reclamation projects in the pipeline, an official said on Tuesday.

Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, in a statement, said the Cebu Provincial Reclamation Authority (CPRA) is now studying reclamation proposals from Toledo City and the towns of Balamban, Carmen, Compostela, Dumanjug and Oslob to reclaim certain areas.

In Toledo City, a 180,579-square-meter reclamation project will form part of the waterfront area’s urban development effort as a new place for a sports stadium, yacht club, commercial and business process outsourcing centers, hospitality, and education facilities.

“I would like to thank Governor Gwen and the Provincial Board members for guiding us. Our target this year is to finish the project this year,” Toledo City Mayor Marjorie Perrales said in a statement.

Balamban, the west Cebu province’s shipbuilding capital, plans to construct a dome, a wharf, and an evacuation center in its 84,000-square-meter proposed reclamation area.

The whale-watching town of Oslob is poised to build a commercial hub in its planned 10-hectare reclamation lot, while Dumanjug wanted to establish income-generating food and commercial facilities in its undetermined size of reclamation area.

Each of the five-hectare reclamation projects in the towns of Carmen and Compostela will be home to their respective public market, transport facilities and structures to protect residents from storm surges.

The CPRA required the six local government units to accomplish documentary requirements for their reclamation projects, including the necessary environmental compliance certificate from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. (PNA)
