A new face will now be joining the outstanding roster of actresses for DC’s upcoming Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn). Filipina-Korean actress Ella Jay Basco will be suiting up as Cassandra Cain–better known as Batgirl. Basco has previously appeared in TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Teachers, and Veep but Birds of Prey is set to be her biggest project yet.
Birds of Prey deals with the aftermath of Batman’s (played by Ben Affleck) departure from Gotham City and Harley Quinn’s (played by Margot Robbie) decision to finally leave the Joker (played by Jared Leto). Young Cassandra accidentally comes across a diamond belonging to Black Mask (played by Ewan McGregor), an evil crime lord and classic Batman villain in the comics. To protect her, Harley teams up with Black Canary (played by Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Renee Montoya (played by Rosie Perez).
In the comics, Cassandra is the daughter of assassins David Cain and Lady Shiva. Much of her childhood years were spent developing her to become the world’s greatest assassin so she was deprived of speech and human contact. In time, she became an expert at martial arts but still remained mute, challenged by social interaction, and even illiterate. Basco was committed to putting her own spin on the character early on. In preparation for the month-long audition process, she read comics featuring Cassandra, watched movies of actresses she was inspired by, and even brushed up on her martial arts skills.
Birds of Prey is set to hit theaters on Feburary 7, 2020
