If the return of “The Phantom of the Opera” in Manila isn’t enough to pump up the theater enthusiast side of you, then perhaps the announcement that Cats coming back to Manila will do the trick!
Another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical masterpiece will be brought back by Concertus Manila, the company that previously brought us Les Miserables (2016), Wicked (2017), and The Lion King (2018).
While there are no official announcements yet, the award-winning classic musical is set to make its mark on The Theater at Solaire in Parañaque City, where the musical’s billboard was recently displayed.
Based on TS Eliot’s book called “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” the musical follows a tribe of felines (the “Jellicles”) who gathered on the night of the Jellicle Ball where one of them will be selected by their leader to receive a new life.
Cats first opened on London’s West End in 1981, and then later on Broadway in 1982, and has since won countless awards including Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Costume Design, and Best Lighting Design.
The musical’s last visit on Manila was in 2010 and featured an international cast from Australia and the UK, together with Lea Salonga, who took the role of Grizabella, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
