Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest man-made building, lit up with the Filipino flag as the Philippines celebrated its 121st independence from Spain. Filipino crowds who witnessed the lighting broke out in cheers as the Philippine flag’s colors of red, white and blue, accentuated by the iconic stars and sun, illuminated the skyscraper.
The Philippines’ celebration of Independence day marks the country’s liberation from 333 years of Spanish rule. On June 12, 1898, Philippine revolutionary forces proclaimed sovereignty and independence from the European power’s colonial rule. Consul-General Paul Raymund Cortes in the United Arab Emirates said that the Independence Day was a monumental occasion that manifests pride and joy for the Filipino community in the UAE.
