Avengers: Endgame. The first movie to be re-released in cinemas with the addition of something at the end of the film. Some netizens are calling Avengers: Endgame the first film with Downloadable Content (DLC).
Now, what would this mean for the movie industry?
Movies only ever return to cinema due to popular demand; but now we have Endgame, which returned to cinemas with the promise of a stinger, an introduction with Anthony Russo, a sneak peek of Spiderman: Far From Home, and a tribute to Stan Lee. The rerelease happened only within weeks of the movie leaving the cinemas.
An obvious attempt in trying to beat Avatar in the box office, which did not bear fruit. The question now is, will other movies follow suit? Or will movies be discouraged due to the failure?
This is, however, an interesting attempt to try and take number one. Considering that no one has done it before.
I feel that the attempt, especially in this style would not be feasible. The only reason that this was done, or at least done was because of the fact that it was Marvel Studios. They had a strong build-up for this finale. If another studio were to do it with any other move, it wouldn’t be as strong as the effect of Endgame. Especially since it had a strong run during its time at the cinemas.
Rereleases are commonplace in the modern cinema. Avatar (2009) and The Dark Knight (2008) are two good examples of rereleases done right.
In the end, movies will keep doing this in order to reach their milestones. This is a normal occurrence, maybe not in the style of Avengers: Endgame, but it will definitely keep happening.
