Aquaman stars Jason Momoa and Amber Heard together with Director James Wan visit the Philippines for the first time for the Asian leg of the multi-city promotion of the Warner Bros. Pictures film. The promotion started with a press conference at the Grand Hyatt Manila Tuesday afternoon of December 11. Momoa, Heard and Wan answered a few questions from both local and foreign press.
When asked if he relates to Aquaman being from two different worlds, Momoa expressed that the role might even be meant for him considering his background.
“Pretty dead- on similar. My upbringing was 100% different worlds. One race and another race, and a lot of culture, except for that culture. So I can identify with it and I love both my experiences very much. I’m surrounded by people that love their home and never want to leave their home I’m just one of those people that wanders, so I can totally understand it.”
Heard on the other hand felt that there are lack of roles offered or available to women which paint a fuller, stronger, and accurate depiction of the female experience.
“We need more representation in all aspects of the industry and especially in the comic book superhero world. It’s incredibly thrilling and energizing for me to be able to answer that demand and be part of the change as we start to see our demands being met, our demands to increase representation across the world.
Director James Wan shares that he wants the audience to be able to sense a sense of excitement when coming into the theaters but leaving with a greater message.
“I want them to enjoy the movie with this crazy fun ride. But I want them coming out in that movie realizing that the messages of that movie is something that is very important. The message about family unity and most importantly, the other message that I think is important but it’s kinda on the background is the environmental message of it all”.
After the Q&A the three posed for pictures and left for the fan event at the SM Mall Of Asia Music Hall.
The Aquaman cast arrived at the Music Hall a few hours later for the much-anticipated Blue Carpet Fan Event.
Jason Momoa, Amber Heard and James Wan energetically interacted with fans. The cast and director eagerly took selfies and signed artworks and memorabilia from the die-hard supporters.
Aquaman opened on approximately 643 screens on December 12, with sold-out shows taking in an impressive Php 230.4-million in its opening weekend in the Philippines. The opening weekend marked the All-Time Biggest December Opening Weekend for a Foreign Title, surpassing 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens with Php 188-million.
