When Sy graduated from Stanford University, she made her way to Silicon Valley’s start-up world and found herself immersed in the world of data science and machine learning. She later headed home to the Philippines in 2013, at a time when the local data science scene was still in its infancy and there was much room for growth. Sy then founded Thinking Machines, a start-up which aims to use data-driven research for smarter decision-making across different institutions. Some of their previous work includes an analysis of news articles on traffic incidents to determine patterns of road safety reporting which was submitted to the World Health Organization and a report of voter registration patterns using data provided by the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. In recognition of Sy’s outstanding work in enterprise technology, she was included in the 2018 edition of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Asia.
